Programs of the Grapevine Historical Society

The Grapevine Historical Society provides a vast array of excellent opportunities to learn and share the history of the Grapevine Area. We are excited to invite new members to our meetings - for all of us have a strong interest in our community and it is nice to share that wealthy of knowledge with others. Our meetings are at 7:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Grapevine Public Library. Come join us! This is a great way to learn about your community, meet others, and spend an interesting evening. Monday, January 26, 2009: Paul Benson will tell us what we need to know before seeing the King Tut exhibit. in Dallas until May. This will be a treat for all of us as he is an expert on the Egyptian religion and era. Come with your questions about this amazing exhibit.

Monday, February 23, 2009: Michael Patterson will present a program on his extensive research finding Grapevine area Civil War veterans and their gravesites

Monday, March 23, 2009: Nationally known author, guide and historian John Waugh will present a program on the Civil War or some related 19th Century Topic.

Monday, April 27, 2009: Tom Wayne, Director of Sales, Promotions, and Events for Grapevine Vintage Railroad will tell about this Grapevine resource.

Friday, May 8, 2009: Plan to join us for our annual Road trip to historical Grapevine Springs, Bird’s Fort, Johnson’s Station – all within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area. Our guide will be Dr. Paul Benson.

Monday, May 25, 2009: The Grapevine Public Library will be closed in honor of Memorial Day. There will not be a meeting this month.

Monday, June 22, 2009:  Newspapers all over the country are going under, and rumors abound about The Dallas News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The Grapevine Sun has been telling about the happenings in our town for 114 years as it saw Grapevine's history reported to the townspeople as well as kept up with the gossip and interest of the goings-on for much of the history of the town. A sad day in Grapevine's history was on Thursday, April 30th when the last edition of the Grapevine Sun was published. We have invited Les Cockrell, our former editor, to be with us on June 22. Les will fill us in on the inside scoop of the paper's history and what's going on in the newspaper industry. We will learn about some of the news and stories reported over the long history of the Sun.

July 2009: There is not a meeting of the Grapevine Historical Society this month.

Monday, August 24, 2009: (Meeting Location will be at Nash Farm, 626 Ball Street.) The Grapevine Historical Society will meet at Nash Farm to hear David Klempin, Historic Preservation Officer and Township Restoration Coordinator for the City of Grapevine, tell us about Nash Farm located at 626 Ball Street. Nash Farm has gone through an exciting restoration period and is opened for tours by appointment. Come join us as we listen to David�s presentation and view a video that will walk us through this process. We will be touring the farmhouse and the farm. What an exciting evening we have planned for you! See you at the farm!

Monday, September 28, 2009: Grapevine’s Bay View Club celebrated its 100th birthday in 2008. Members of the Club will share the history and service of the Bay View Club to the area.

Monday, October 26, 2009: Collector John Kalvelage will show his WW II collection, explain the uses and history of various objects and have an “Antiques Road Show” – explaining the value and uses of artifacts brought by members to the meeting.

Monday, November 23, 2009: Aside from Pearl Harbor, not directly remembered by many in the Society, the most dramatic historical event of our lifetimes was the Kennedy assassination, tasking took place within a few miles of us. Controversial questions will exist for the rest of our lifetimes and beyond. Author and historian Jim Gatewood and Society members will discuss various theories upholding or disagreeing with the Warren Commission.

December 2009: There is not a meeting of the Grapevine Historical Society this month.
