The Grapevine Historical Society provides a vast array of excellent opportunities to learn and share the history of the Grapevine Area. We are excited to have new members join us – for all of us have a strong interest in our community and it is nice to share that wealthy of knowledge with others. Our meetings are at 7:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Grapevine Public Library. Come join us! This is a great way to learn about your community, meet others, and spend an interesting evening. If you have new ideas for programs and presenters your ideas may be conveyed to the executive board. You can contact me at 817-481-8252 or here through our website. Ralph Gary, 2nd Vice President/Program Chairman Programs of the Grapevine Historical Society
(June – November 2008)June 23, 2008: The WW II home-front will be illuminated with the sharing of all who can who lived through that time. Gas prices are ridiculous! Right? But do you remember when the World War Two ration books only allowed three gallon a week? And there was little or no butter; you had to add a yellow coloring and pretend it tasted something like butter. There was little meat and bacon and everything was scarce, but worst of all was not knowing if loved ones far away would return. People were uprooted and many came here for the first time and met their future spouses. If you remember, come, share, and preserve through our video your experiences and thoughts about “the greatest generation” at home during the greatest war in history. If you don’t remember come to hear some first-hand experiences far more interesting than books or the History Channel, because you can hear it first hand. Also collector and dealer John Kalvelage will have several tables of items from the era displayed.
August 25, 2008: Max Ratheal, will tell us about the Comanche Indians and the U. S. Cavalry
September 22, 2008: Kathleen Tolbert Ryan, famous local historian and writer Frank X. Tolbert's daughter, will discuss travels in Texas with him, and his books now in our library and will present others to the library.
October 27, 2008: Author and historian Fiske Hanley will discuss his book and experiences in WW II. This is a shocking story of captured airmen awaiting trial and execution that we should not forget. We will again be reminded of how lucky we are as Americans.
November 24, 2008: Joe Moore, Assistant Dir. Parks and Rec. on history of Grapevine parks, his office, and historic sites in area: 6500-year old site north of mall on Denton Creek, also covering 3 time frames, mammoth head and dinosaur tracks uncovered near lake and recovered, bi-centennial tree, c 1817, fell last year and he will present part to society, etc.
